The Lonely Doll

The most influential book of my childhood was The Lonely Doll by Dare Wright. It has been called “the creepiest children’s book” by The New Yorker and became a cult classic. As a child, I lost myself in these pages for hours. I imagined myself into this doll’s life. She was my inner life when all I could feel inside was numbness. With the help of my dear friend Thedra Cullar-Ledford, we set about collaborating on a new version of the book in which I am the doll. The pandemic cut this collaboration short–we only achieved the controversial spanking scene-but stay tuned, there is much more to come.
